High-speed chase leads to fatal car crash
A traffic stop yesterday led to a fatal car accident, with one person dying yesterday due to a head-on collision on the corner of 6 Mile and McNicholas Road. Bangladeshi American Mahidul Islam Sujan died yesterday.
The incident started with a traffic stop, which resulted in two women assaulting three Hamtramck Police Officers, and leading to a police chase and a fatal car accident involving a total of five cars.
Hamtramck Police Chief Jamiel Altaheri says another person died in the hospital this morning, Sujan’s father.
“So we had two fatalities as a result of this horrific and fatal and just tragic accident,” he says.
He says Hamtramck officers have also gone to the hospital for their cuts and bruises.
“There's three officers that were injured, not related to the crash, but prior to the incident, when they confronted the two defendants, perpetrators at the time, who did not comply with the officers’ commands and assaulted the three officers,” he says.
The Detroit Police Department and Michigan State Police are investigating the matter further, as the crash occurred in Detroit. The two perpetrators are in custody.
Community members say they are concerned about high-speed crashes in densely populated areas and the long wait time for an ambulance to arrive on the scene.
An Ohio man has been arrested for allegedly threatening to harm immigrants in Hamtramck
Last Saturday the Hamtramck Police Department was alerted by the Toledo Police Department of a possible threat from an Ohio man who wanted to harm immigrants in Hamtramck, according to Hamtramck Police Chief Jamiel Altaheri.
Yemeni American girl stabbed by man at park in Detroit
A 7-year-old Yemeni American girl had her throat slashed by a 73-year-old man while at Ryan Park in Detroit with her grandmother. The Council on American Islamic Relations, Michigan chapter (CAIR-MI) and U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib said the matter should be investigated as a hate crime.
The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office has not declared this to be a hate crime. Gary Lansky has been taken into custody and charged, "with assault with intent to murder and felonious assault.”
Saida Mashrah is now recovering.
