Women connecting through art
Global Detroit hosts Fiber Optics art exhibit in Hamtramck
A few years ago when Global Detroit began doing work in Southwest Detroit and Banglatown, organizers realized they weren’t connecting with immigrant women. They decided to find out why. They launched an art-based program, the Common Bond’s Muslin Ladies Social Club, to bring immigrant, non-immigrant, Muslim, and non-Muslim women together. Now Global Detroit and its partners are hosting the Fiber Optics art exhibit to showcase textile arts created by participants.
I spoke with Global Detroit Director of Economic and Corporate Strategy Gracie Xavier for WDET to find out more about the Fiber Optics exhibit, which documents the work of the Common Bond project over the years. The exhibit and special events will kick off on June 18 at the Oloman Cafe & Gallery in Hamtramck.
