A wintry storm has taken over the U.S. bringing cold temperatures, snow, and rain through Michigan and eastern states. Michigan has seen temperatures drop to 2 degrees in Detroit, with 50 mph winds making the real feel -20 degrees.
Officials warn people to stay indoors and stay off the roads as much as possible.
A pot of shutki shira (Bangladeshi dried shrimp stew)
Winter days with cold weather are perfect for making soups and stews. While you may be getting your fix of chicken noodle soup or beef stew - here’s another type of stew that is loaded with veggies, umami shrimp, and a blast of flavor from habanero pepper. Shutki shira is usually made with garden fresh veggies during the spring or summer - but it’s something you can enjoy at any time of the year.
You either love it or hate it — since it’s an acquired taste. One of my favorite UK-based Bangladeshi food writers Dina Begum has this recipe for shutki shira. If you give it a try, do let us know!
If you’re in a hurry, make egg curry
If you’re looking for an easy comfort food to make in this weather, grab some ingredients you probably already have at home - eggs and spices - and make it a meal.
Deem bhuna, or egg curry is a simple Bangladeshi recipe to make when you want to eat something different but also don’t want to do a lot of work.
If you want to add a spin to this classic dish, try Banglar Rannaghor’s eggplant and egg curry.
