Who was Colonel Hamtramck?
This week we’re taking a look at two missions - one to bring health care to people and the other, the meaning behind the name “Hamtramck,” the city surrounded by Detroit.
Recovery Mobile Clinic brings care to those in need
Nurse practitioner Jordana Latozas realized many people did not have transportation to their appointments. That’s why in February 2020, she decided to bring health care to those in need through the Recovery Mobile Clinic, a clinic on wheels. The mobile clinic quickly became a COVID testing and vaccination site, and a place which provided medicine for those trying to overcome substance or alcohol abuse.
Latozas told me for WDET, “My husband happens to sell RVs. We put our heads together a little bit and started investigating the mobile model and how it can apply to addiction medicine, and really found that there isn’t a whole lot out there. So we formed the nonprofit and got it going on the road.”

Do you know who the City of Hamtramck was named after?
The city of Hamtramck, surrounded by Detroit, was named after Colonel Jean Francois Hamtramck, later known as John Francis Hamtramck. Although he was French Canadian, a WDET listener asked whether the surname Hamtramck is French. I investigated this story for WDET’s CuriosiD podcast, where reporters find answers about things related to Detroit.
For those of you who don’t live in Michigan, Hamtramck is a 2.2 sq. mile city.
