Millions displaced by floods in Bangladesh
Catastrophic floods ravaged Assam, India and Sylhet, Bangladesh over the past few weeks due to heavy rainfall and climate change. The New York Times reports nearly 70 people have died in Bangladesh since mid-May, while millions have been displaced. Along with the floods, people are dying from waterborne diseases, and landslides which are sweeping away homes, livestock and people. People have lost agriculture, such as rice fields which people cultivate for sustenance. In some areas, floodwaters reach up to the top of treetops. UNICEF reports 36,000 children are seeking refuge from the floods with their families. Global Voices reports, about 5,000 dams built in India, flow downstream into Bangladesh, contributing to the flooding. Bangladesh’s army has been deployed to distribute food to those in need.
Agencies are collecting funds for those in need.
