High school fellowship trains girls of color to run for office
The Office of State Senator Stephanie Chang’s office is looking for sophomores and juniors in high school girls to take part of the Girls Making Change Fellowship Program. The fellowship prepares girls of color to run for office through the paid program. Students will learn leadership skills by networking with national and local political leaders. They will learn about community development, justice issues, and how to be civically engaged. The fellowship is in partnership with the Mary Turner Center for Advocacy. The fellowship is June 16-August 11, on Fridays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The program application deadline is tonight — May 26, by 11:59 p.m.
Early registration open for Warren’s Summer Reading Club
Warren Public Library has kicked off its early registration for summer reading. The program features prizes for all age groups for racking up those reading pages and books. The program takes place from June 3- August 12. Kids and teens have an opportunity to win a Nintendo Switch Lite and other prize baskets. Adults can apply too. Syrian American physician writes a book about the Syrian refugee crisis
Nour Akhras is a Syrian American physician. She’s visited countries on medical missions with the Syrian American Medical Society and MedGlobal. Now she wrote a book about the Syrian refugee crisis, to highlight on-the-ground experiences. Her book, “Just One: A Journey of Perseverance and Conviction,” is a timeline of the ongoing Syrian civil war.
