Muhammad Yunus visits New York during UNGA meeting
Last week Yunus met with Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken at the United National General Assembly to discuss Bangladesh’s future and the United States-Bangladesh partnership. Blinken also spoke about free and fair elections. Yunus visited during the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. He also met with the Prime Ministers of Nepal, Pakistan and the Netherlands.
Lebanese Americans scramble to leave the Lebanon amid air strikes and ground incursion by Israel
Michigan is home to one of the U.S.’s largest Lebanese communities. Israel has began ground incursions this week in Lebanon, killing over 1,000 people. Prime Minister of Lebanon Najib Mikati says a million people have been displaced.
The U.S. Embassy in Beirut said on the platform X that people can purchase tickets to leave. Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib said those flights cost up to 8-thousand dollars. AlJazeera reported, this week about 100 people were able to get a charted flight that’s about $350 per seat, out of about 6,000 Americans who are trying to leave the country. Michigan State Rep. Alabas Farhat told NPR today that there’s still a lot of chaos for people who are trying to get out of Lebanon. Farhat says the Biden administration’s, “response so far has been nothing short of pathetic.”
This week Mixchigan’s Hajj Kamel Ahmad Jawad was killed in Lebanon by an Israeli air strike while volunteering at a hospital. His daughter Nadine Jawad posted this statement about his death:
Funeral services will be held in Michigan on Sunday at the Islamic Center of America.
