Michigan officials say fewer babies die each year
Michigan infant mortality rates are lowest they’ve ever been
The State of Michigan reports a decline in infant mortality rates to 6.1 infant deaths per 1,000 live births since 2023. The Black infant mortality is at 11.9 infant deaths per 1,000 live births. Infant mortality is measured by babies who die before their first birthday, due to low birth weights or other health issues. Officials say racism and systematic inequalities lead to double the Black infant mortality rate compared to white babies. Officials say better prenatal care and hiring birth doulas contribute to better health outcomes. (WDET).
This workforce development program aims to reduce the healthcare provider shortage
The Academy is training students to work in the health care field to reduce the provider shortage in Michigan. Students are awarded $4,200, given 180 additional training hours, and support. Students are chosen from educationally and economically disadvantaged communities. Briget Weller, a professor of Social Work at Wayne State University, says that many times, students go back into their communities to give back. The program works as supplemental education for community college and undergraduate programs.
