Muslims reflect on the sacrifice of Prophet Abraham
Eid Al-Adha is the Feast of Sacrifice. The holiday commemorates the sacrifice of Prophet Abraham who was willing to sacrifice his son Ismail for God. It also marks the end of hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca, for Muslims who can afford to make the trip at least once in their lifetime.
Muslims begin the day with prayer, then meet with family and friends. During the day, they also sacrifice a lamb or cow and distribute the meat among family and friends, and the poor. Check out this photo essay, featured on WDET.
Detroit Documenters takes voters back to the basics
Detroit Documenters, which is a part of Outlier Media, just published an election voter guide on how to learn more about elections — thinking about things like, “Do I have a ride to the election polls?,” to how to research candidates.
Detroit Documenters coordinator Noah Kincade recently sat down with me for WDET to talk about how they put this guide together. Detroit Documenters is a program which trains and pays citizens to take notes at public meetings. Tomorrow Documenters are meeting at Belle Isle Park for a clean up at 9:30 a.m. Next week Documenters is hosting a virtual orientation for new people who want to be a part of the program. Get paid to cover city meetings. Find out more here.

Finjan Cafe owner Fares Abdulmalek pays homage to Yemeni roots
In the beginning of the pandemic Fares Abdulmalek was working at local hospitals and clinics. Soon after he decided he didn’t want to work at places which were highly susceptible to exposing him to the COVID-19 virus and bringing it home to his family. Then Abdulmalek took a leap of faith, opening Finjan Cafe which serves organic Yemeni coffee in October 2021.
“I was inspired to mix the two cultures and also help Yemeni farmers. So we’re importing coffee from Yemen, and we’re having other cultures try the Yemeni coffee.”
Abdulmalek combined his love for Yemeni heritage with Americans’ love of coffee. In the process, he can help Yemeni farmers who are living through a civil war and famine.
Finjan Cafe is located in Garden City. This story is part of the Communities of Hope series, featuring people from minority communities who found ways to preservere through the pandemic.
