Mamdani and Hanif win New York primary election seats
New York celebrates Mamdani’s win, Hanif secures spot for re-election
This week, Zohran Mamdani is a 33-year-old New York assemblymember who led his campaign as a democratic socialist. During the past few weeks, ads rolled out in different languages for people to come together and vote for the candidate who ran on putting a rent freeze and free bus passes. He particularly resonated with young and immigrant voters, who came out to campaign for him in the numbers. NPR reports:
“With 93% of precincts reporting, Mamdani garnered 44% of ballots — the most of the 11 candidates and far more than the 36% of former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, the one-time frontrunner. Cuomo conceded to Mamdani on Tuesday night, but has left the door open to run as an independent in November's general election.”
Mamdani is headed to the November polls as the Democratic nominee for New York City mayor.
Also in New York, Shahana Hanif, who was elected as the first Muslim and Bangladeshi woman to get elected to the New York City Council, has won in the primaries for a re-election bid.
Both candidates were in the spotlight for their support for Gaza.
Iranian Americans are concerned about the escalations in the Iran-Israel war
This week, Trump announced a ceasefire in the Iran-Israel war. An Iranian American professor says the Iranian American community is concerned that people with dual nationalities are stuck in Iran during the fighting. Professor Camron Amin, who teaches Middle East and Iranian diaspora studies at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, says there are also concerns of any escalation in the war.
