Honoring older adults, caregivers and memories
Dear readers,
We’re taking a dive into Alzheimer’s Awareness and Caregivers Month. We’re also talking about honoring our elders by remaking recipes they have passed on. And some updates on the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Sincerely,

My Nanu’s potato salad
by Guest Contributor Marzia Chowdhury
My Nanu used to make potato salad every year for our Thanksgiving spread and since then it’s always been one of if not, my favorite side dish. I’ve been making potato salad for my family’s Thanksgiving for as long as I can remember. I still use the same recipe my grandmother used. As I started a family of my own, I’ve tried to incorporate my childhood comforts into traditions for my own little family. Potatoes are simple, affordable, and can last up to 5 days in your fridge if stored properly – in a closed container. Also, who doesn’t love potatoes? Potato salad is akin to our aloo bortha, but different condiments are used.
You can really add whatever you like and make it your own.
Today starts the four-day pause in the Israel-Hamas conflict
Israel and Hamas have agreed to a four-day ceasefire starting today. According to AlJazeera, during the four-day period 50 Israel hostages will be exchanged for 150 Palestinian prisoners, many of whom have been held without charges.
It’s also a time for humanitarian aid to enter Gaza.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is working in Gaza to facilitate the hostage release. Many of the Israeli hostages are foreign and dual nationals from 40 countries, reports Reuters. So far two dozen hostages have been released today.
Since the conflict began on Oct. 7, more than a million Palestinians have been displaced, and over 14,000 Palestinians and 1,200 Israelis have been killed. The agreement was facilitated by Qatar. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says this is a temporary pause on the conflict.
