Here are five cost-saving ways to make the most of summer with your kids

Children are the apple of our eyes and they never fail to test our patience, especially the little ones! We are in the final stretch of summer and our kids are driving us crazy! The lack of structured routines and activities leaves them feeling restless and constantly having a need for attention. If moms had a dime, no, even a nickel for every time they heard the phrase, “I’m bored,” they would have a sizable bank balance! Here are a few tips to keep them busy without making a hole in your purse:
Include them while planning for outdoor activities - just about every state has a program where you can enjoy free or reduced-cost admissions to state parks or other activities with your local library card. Check out your options for Michigan!
Gardening - the cost of seeds for vegetables or herbs is super reasonable and children love being involved in the process. The first thing they’ll check on every morning is their plant! If you have older children, they can research all about how to germinate the seeds and how much water and light the specific plant requires. You can certainly do this all year round with other plants that don’t require the summer heat.
Volunteering - Whether it’s an organization you are passionate about or your local spiritual community, children thrive from being compassionate from an early age. Us being involved with others is a great way to build lasting relationships for both the children and ourselves.
Don’t underestimate the power of your local library or museums - make this a daily or weekly trip, depending on the age of your children. Let their imagination soar by immersing themselves in the world of books and history!
Plan for picnics - you don’t have to go far but do make a big deal out of it. You can enjoy a meal in your backyard on a regular basis. Kids love being involved in helping set up a picnic blanket or prepping for the meals. This will provide some much-needed fresh air for everyone!
Summer doesn’t have to deplete our patience and test our sanity. You only have 18 years with the children before they’re heading off to college! Being present and having fun in the time we do spend with them is what’s most important.
