Happy Women's History Month
This month is Women’s History Month, a celebration of the women around you that make the world go round. In this edition, we will explore mutual aid work in Detroit, and find out about a new podcast in Hamtramck.
Southwest Detroit mutual aid group assisted those most in need during the pandemic
Two years ago when the pandemic started, people like Gabriela Santiago-Romero noticed there weren’t resources for some immigrant and undocumented families. She got to work - putting a Google Form together for people to reach out. Then volunteers came together to create the mutual aid group to work together. Southwest Detroit Community CARE became a source of hope for Detroiters.
“Voices of Hamtramck” shines a light on the similarities and differences of people living in the city
A new podcast was launched called Voices of Hamtramck by Detroit Friendship House, hosted by DFH Program Director Khurshida Hossain. The podcast looks at the contributions of the various immigrants that make up the diverse 2.2 sq. mile city, featuring guests from different backgrounds to talk about what makes the city unique and how people live side-by-side while learning from each other.
According to the website, “In this series, we will deep dive into the personal narratives of the residents that make up Hamtramck. We will look into the contributions of immigrants to American life, understand some of the challenges they face, and most importantly examine common threads of humanity behind these narratives.”
Check out the first episode featuring Bangladeshi American Farzana Noor who is a pediatric and family nurse practitioner at The Children's Clinic of Michigan and DMC neonatal care unit.
