Bangladesh elections draw criticism from Western countries
Bangladesh held general elections this week, with Sheikh Hasina winning her fifth term. However, the United States and United Kingdom say, the election was not fair due to multiple people from opposing parties being locked up — or protesting the election altogether. The U.S. and U.K. have ongoing economic relations with the country.
Hasina is 76 and the daughter of Bangladesh’s founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
South Africa takes Israel to the International Court of Justice on allegations of genocide
This week South Africa asked the International Court of Justice to determine whether Israel has committed war crimes in the ongoing Isreal-Palestine conflict. Israel says these claims are “baseless.” Part of Israel’s argument is that the military is after Hamas, not civilians. Over 23,000 Palestinian civilians have been killed by the Israeli military since the conflict began, according to the health ministry in Gaza.
South Africa is asking the court to legally make Israel suspend its military operations, however, it’s hard to say how this order would be enforced, reports the BBC.
Hazardous weather conditions in Michigan
A wintery storm began this afternoon in Southeast Michigan. There is a winter weather advisory until 7 p.m. Saturday. There are high winds up to 50 mph, snow, and blowing snow. Drivers are asked to use caution while out on the roads. Over 98,000 Metro Detroiters have lost power due to the storm.
