Eid Mubarak to all those who are celebrating! Eid Al-Fitr is a holiday marking the end of Ramadan. There are 1.8 billion Muslims worldwide, with about 300,000 Muslims living in Metro Detroit. People celebrate by spending time with family and friends, eating treats and gifting each other.
“The Night Before Eid” tale of Egyptian American family preparing for Eid
Author Aya Khalil wrote a new book, sharing a story about an Egyptian American family making ka’ak cookies, also known commonly as maamoul, for the Eid holiday. Khalil says she wrote this book as a way to commemorate Eid holidays and creative inclusive books for kids to grow up with.
“In Search of Bengali Harlem” documentary showing in Detroit
The Freep Film Festival is hosting the movie “In Search of Bengali Harlem” as part of the Freep x AAPI Film Series Detroit. The movie shares the story of Alaudin Ullah looking for answers about his family’s history. There is a free virtual showing Thursday, and a free in-person screening at the Detroit Historical Museum, Friday at 7 p.m.
