Here's how people are mourning the ongoing Middle East conflict in Detroit
Hundreds of people from Metro Detroit came together at Hart Plaza last night to pray, sing, and recite poetry as they mourned the lives lost during the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. The Ministry of Health has reported over 11,000 people died in Gaza. In Israel, 1,200 people died from the Oct. 7th attacks.
People brought candles, teddy bears, and notes for a memorial. There were also prayers from different traditions - including Native American, Muslim, Jewish, and Christian. Nearly 30 organizations put the event together.
Muslim leaders call on voters to “abandon Biden” in 2024
Last week Muslim leaders rallied in front of the federal courthouse in Detroit to call on voters not to vote for President Biden in the 2024 presidential elections. Dearborn activist Mona Mawari says she’s disappointed in Biden’s “disregard for human life,” referring to the U.S.’s funding of Israel in the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Biden’s support among Arab American voters has also decreased by 40 percent since 2020, according to the Arab American Institute. Dearborn voters, home to the largest concentration of Arab Americans in the U.S., played a vital role in Biden’s win over Michigan during the last presidential election. Experts and voters say that might not be the case this time around.
What you need to know about Alzheimer’s disease
The Alzheimer’s Association reports about 6.7 million adults 65 and older in the U.S. have Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disorder that causes memory loss, cognitive dysfunction, and behavior changes. It’s also one of the most common forms of dementia.
The Alzheimer’s Association is encouraging people to get tested early if they are showing symptoms or by 65 years old.
Women, Black and Hispanic/LatinX populations have a higher chance of getting Alzheimer’s. Early detection can help an individual or loved one get the support they need to make lifestyle changes. The association has a 24/7 hotline in 200 languages. Call 800-272-3900 or dial 711 to connect with an operator.
People can reduce the effects of Alzheimer’s by eating a balanced diet, sleeping properly, and exercising. For information on dementia in Bangla, check out the Alzheimer’s Society here.
