Biden nominates Bangladeshi woman as a federal judge
Earlier this week President Biden nominated Nusrat Choudhury for a federal judge position at the U.S. judge in the Eastern District of New York.
Choudhury is the legal director of the ACLU of Illinois. She previously served as Deputy Director of the national ACLU Racial Justice Program and as a staff attorney in the ACLU National Security Project.
If confirmed, she will become the first Bangladeshi American and first Muslim woman to serve as a federal judge. Choudhury graduated from Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs and Yale Law School.

Hamtramck judge issues public apology after telling an elderly man she would throw him in jail for unkept alley
In Hamtramck District Court judge Alexis Krot issued an apology for telling 72-year-old Bangladeshi man and Burhan Chowdhury she would throw him in jail for an unkempt alley. “If I could give you jail time on this, I would,” she said.
Chowdhury told Krot repeatedly that he had cancer and was unable to keep up with the weeds. Chowdhury was cited in August 2021 during a time when there was heavy rainfall and his son Shibbir was unable to help him clean the weeds.
“Shameful! The neighbors should not have to look at that. You should be ashamed of yourself,” Krot said in the video which has gone viral. A change.org petition has over 237,000 signatures requesting Krot’s removal from office. Since the petition, a LaunchGood campaign has been started by Chowdhury’s family soliciting funds to help with medical and home expenses.
