Bangladeshi teen shot by Warren Police
Dear Saa Nasta Readers,
This week the Warren Police Department released a bodycam in the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old Bangladeshi man who was suffering a mental health crisis, according to his family.
An organization in New York is collecting money for the family of a 19-year-old who was also killed by police following a mental health crisis. Now community members are wondering what this means for the Bangladeshi community and police relations.
With peace,
Nargis
18-year-old Bangladeshi boy fatally shot by Warren Police following a domestic incident
Last week 18-year-old Hussain Al Raji was shot by Warren Police following a domestic dispute. Police came to the home to investigate the matter, which led to the fatal shooting of Al Raji in front of his house. Police allege that Al Raji pointed a gun at them.
Since then, the police department has released bodycam footage (Trigger Warning: graphic) and the 9-1-1 call. Al Raji’s family says he was having a mental health crisis leading up to the incident.
On March 27, 19-year-old Win Rozario was killed by the New York Police Department following a similar mental health crisis, where he called the police for help. Instead, they tasered him, alleging he pointed a pair of scissors at them. The NYPD then fatally shot him in front of his family, who believe the police used excessive force.
Now Desis Rising Up & Moving (DRUM) is collecting money for Win’s funeral costs, including helping his family raise money to leave the apartment where Win was killed. They hope to raise $15,000 to support the family.
