On December 16, 1971, East Pakistan became the State of Bangladesh.
This came after years of struggle stemming from cultural and linguistic differences between West and East Pakistan. An estimated 3 million people died during the Bangladeshi Liberation War. Read more about it on the Bengalis of New York’s website.
